What Jehovah’s Witnesses Believe
Jehovah’s Witnesses (JWs) hold distinct beliefs that set them apart from mainstream Christianity. While they claim to follow the Bible, their teachings differ significantly from historic Christian doctrine. Below is an overview of their key beliefs and why these doctrines fall short of true salvation through Jesus Christ.

1. What Jehovah’s Witnesses Believe and Teach
God:
Jehovah’s Witnesses believe that God is one person, rejecting the doctrine of the Trinity. They refer to Him exclusively as “Jehovah,” claiming that this is His proper name.
Jesus Christ:
JWs believe that Jesus is not God but a created being—specifically, the Archangel Michael. They teach that Jesus had three stages of existence: first as Michael the Archangel, then as Jesus of Nazareth, and now as Michael, the exalted Archangel in heaven. They deny His bodily resurrection, asserting that He was raised as a spirit being.
Holy Spirit:
Jehovah’s Witnesses reject the personhood of the Holy Spirit, believing Him to be an impersonal force rather than the third Person of the Trinity.
The Trinity:
JWs reject the Trinity, calling it a pagan doctrine and insisting that early Christians never believed in it.
The Bible:
Jehovah’s Witnesses claim to follow the Bible but believe it is authoritative only when interpreted by the Watchtower Society, their governing organization.
Heaven:
They teach that only 144,000 “anointed” Jehovah’s Witnesses will go to heaven, while the rest of their faithful followers will live forever on a paradise earth.
Hell:
Jehovah’s Witnesses deny the existence of an eternal hell, claiming that unbelievers simply cease to exist (annihilationism) rather than suffer eternal punishment.
2. Why These Beliefs and Practices Will Not Save You
Denial of Christ’s Deity and Salvation:
The Bible teaches that Jesus is fully God (John 1:1, Colossians 2:9) and that salvation comes through faith in Him alone (Acts 4:12). By rejecting His deity and His bodily resurrection (Romans 10:9), JWs undermine the very foundation of the Gospel.
Rejection of the Trinity:
The doctrine of the Trinity is essential because it reflects the true nature of God as revealed in Scripture. The Father, Son, and Holy Spirit are distinct yet one in essence (Matthew 28:19). Denying this truth leads to a false understanding of who God is.
Works-Based Salvation:
Jehovah’s Witnesses emphasize works and loyalty to the Watchtower Society rather than salvation by grace through faith (Ephesians 2:8-9). Any system that replaces faith in Christ with human effort is contrary to the Gospel.
Distortion of Scripture:
The Watchtower Society has altered key Bible passages in their New World Translation to fit their doctrines. For example, they mistranslate John 1:1 to say, “the Word was a god,” diminishing Christ’s deity.
False Hope of Limited Salvation:
The Bible teaches that salvation is available to all who believe in Jesus Christ (John 3:16, Romans 10:13). Limiting heaven to 144,000 contradicts the universal invitation of the Gospel.
Denial of Eternal Judgment:
Jesus clearly taught about eternal punishment for the unrepentant (Matthew 25:46, Revelation 20:10). Denying hell removes the urgency of the Gospel message.
